Helpful Troubleshooting Tips

Take a crack at it yourself before calling in the pros. Feel free to give these general tips a try, and if you’re still stuck afterwards, or if you have a complex set-up, just give us a call.

Not turning on

  • Ensure there are fresh batteries in any remotes you are trying to use.
  • Make sure the electrical outlet is powered- Has the breaker box been tripped? You can test the outlet’s power by plugging in a different piece of equipment.
  • If you’re using a power strip or surge protector, try plugging the device directly into the outlet.
  • For projectors: do the air filters need cleaned?

No internet

  • Check with your Service Provider to ensure there are no outages in your area.
  • Make sure all cables are seated securely at their connection points.
  • Try power cycling the equipment- unplug the device(s) from the power source for at least 30 seconds, then plug it back in and allow the device to reboot.

No picture

  • Make sure all cables are seated securely at their connection points.
  • Is the TV/projector on the correct source input? For example, if you are trying to watch a DVD, make sure it is on the “DVD Player” source input.
  • Substitute in a different HDMI cord. Maybe the source content requires a newer cable with updated copyright protection protocols.
  • Try changing the HDMI port the cord is plugged into on the TV/projector. It is possible for the ports themselves to go bad.
  • For projectors- does the unit need a new lamp/bulb?
  • Try power cycling the equipment- unplug the device(s) from the power source for at least 30 seconds, then plug it back in and allow the device to reboot. Do this for both the display and the source (cable box, DVD player, streaming device, etc.).

No audio

  • Ensure audio components are powered on.
  • Make sure all cables are seated securely at their connection points.
  • Is the volume turned all the way down or muted?
  • If a receiver is involved- are the receiver and TV/projector on the same input?
  • Substitute in a different audio cable, or try a different connection type if possible- HDMI vs. optical vs. composite (red & white).
  • Try power cycling the equipment- unplug the device(s) from the power source for at least 30 seconds, then plug it back in and allow the device to reboot.
  • If the speakers are making no noise at all, the amplifier powering the speakers may be dead.
  • If the speakers are fuzzy/muffled or just sound bad, the speaker itself may be damaged.

These are just a few general troubleshooting ideas that commonly fix A/V system problems. Every system is custom configured, so these tips may not apply to every situation.
